Evening, after Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot
Title
Evening, after Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot
Description
Buhot made a number of prints after paintings by others, usually for commercial ends—as images, for example, to be included in a book or catalogue. It was a way of making money for a young artist. This print, however, is not among them. It is, rather, a tribute to the nineteenth-century French artist Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, whom Buhot admired. It was apparently never published.
The task of translating an oil painting, with its areas of color, into a black-and-white medium based on line is a complex one, but one that Buhot here accomplished magnificently. With a wide assortment of etched and drypointed lines, dots, hatchings and careful inking, plus marginal sketches, he produced not merely a reproduction but a reinvention, a work of art in itself.
