Winter in Paris or The Snow in Paris
Title
Winter in Paris or The Snow in Paris
Description
Over the last fifty years, this has become the most widely collected Buhot print in the United States, in part because of the wide availability of the published editions. This impression, however, is one of the rare, exceptionally brilliant proof impressions. The scene is the Place Breda (now Place Gustave Toudouze) on December 9, 1879, during a particularly brutal winter. As shown in the anecdotal margins, the Seine froze over, and horses died in the streets. After publication (states four and five), Buhot reworked the plate, removing the three dogs from the lower center of the image and replacing them with two others—an action that later led to frequent errors by careless cataloguers.
