Woman amid Swans
Title
Woman amid Swans
Description
Impressions of this print in its final state are not common, but those of the first (as here) and second states appear to be of the greatest rarity. Etched into the final state of the plate is the inscription “Souvenir de (“memory of”) Barham Court (Kent) . . . from a sketch by Mrs. E. V. B.” We do not know the identity of the English lady, but her sketch provoked a haunting image, redolent of an England past. Its simplicity and fairytale, dreamlike nostalgia were not typical for Buhot, but he was constantly adapting ideas of other people to his own vision and view of the world.
