Funeral Procession on the Boulevard de Clichy
Title
Funeral Procession on the Boulevard de Clichy
Description
Two impressions of Funeral Procession, ostensibly in the same state, are included because they are so distinct from one another. The difference is due to the choice of paper and the style of printing. The other impression is almost stark in its contrasts, the white areas of stop-out almost unsettling in their brilliance. This impression, on yellowish Japan paper, modulates the whole image with a pale golden tone, subtler and less brilliant. In fact, impressions of this and the final state vary across a wide range, with the artist employing different or additional colors, distinct wipings, and a variety of papers, all of which are more significant than the minor changes in the plate itself that define the states.
