A Street in Valognes
Title
A Street in Valognes
Description
Numerous studies exist for an etching of the same title and composition, all realized, as might be expected, in reverse of the print. This drawing, executed in the same orientation as the etching, was thus likely completed by Buhot as an independent work. The street is the rue de Fantasie. The figure of the woman with the umbrella, accompanied by dogs, on the rain-soaked street was clearly an important one to Buhot, as it recurs frequently in his Valognes subjects and elsewhere. It is not always raining in Buhot’s images, as it does not always rain in Valognes or in England, but it was an important element in his aesthetic world as well as an all-too-common occurrence in his geographical one.
