Buhot in Northern France and England

Buhot was born in the Norman town of Valognes. As a young child he was orphaned and subsequently raised by a family friend in a house on Valognes' main street, the Boulevard des Fantasies, known today as the Boulevard Félix Buhot. The artist regularly returned to Valognes and also made frequent trips to coastal towns throughout Normandy and nearby Brittany. Although these beach communities often appealed to tourists, Buhot found that they also provided vistas that allowed him to explore the effects of atmosphere. Additionally, port cities offered a point of departure for trips to England, where Buhot also created several etchings, both in the Southern English port cities and in London where he depicted the Houses of Parliament and several other major monuments.
