A Storm at Trouville
Title
A Storm at Trouville
Description
The subject matter presented here is typical of the French nineteenth-century landscape painter Eugène Boudin, whose work Buhot admired. However, this image is not based on any Boudin painting or sketch; it is Buhot’s original conception.
The print was popular as a published image (in its fifth state), but Buhot retrieved the plate after publication and reworked it (a typical procedure for him), adding below the main image a small panorama of sketches and greatly enhancing the entire composition. Impressions in this state are scarce. The signature on the plate is an early one, with Buhot’s name purposefully reversed: “Tohub,” something the critic and collector Philippe Burty talked him out of soon afterwards.
