Winter Morning on the Quai de l’Hotel-Dieu
Title
Winter Morning on the Quai de l’Hotel-Dieu
Description
Familiarly known as “The Cab Stand,” this was Buhot’s most famous image for many years, reproduced in virtually every book on nineteenth-century etching. It went through many states and numerous printings as well as a counterfeit reproduction. This impression is probably unique and was inscribed by the artist “état intermediaire avec retroussage” (“intermediate state with retroussage”—a selective wiping of the plate). The work is one of Buhot’s best “weather prints” and the atmosphere is almost palpably cold and wet. Like so many of Buhot’s etchings, it is a portrait of a particular place and time under particular atmospheric conditions. Its poetry lies in such specifics.
