Winter Morning on the Quai de l’Hôtel-Dieu

Title

Winter Morning on the Quai de l’Hôtel-Dieu

Description

There are several known preliminary drawings for “The Cab Stand.” This one is uncatalogued and has not been seen for many years, likely because it was purchased early on and remained in an American private collection until recently. While the others are clearly preparatory drawings, this one appears to be a model for the initial published state of the plate, essentially the same size and direction as the etching, and differing only in small details. The sheet is unsigned, and the sky has not yet been worked out, both finishing gestures that eventually would be realized on the copper plate itself.
