Winter in Paris or The Snow in Paris

Title

Winter in Paris or The Snow in Paris

Description

This enlarged and colored depiction of the principal scene of the etching was made a few years after the print. The painting, in the artist’s estate at the time of his death, essentially disappeared—only to come to light again a hundred years later in a British auction. For those accustomed to the black-and-white image, the color comes as an initial shock. Yet it is perfectly logical and fully realistic that snow, even under a grey sky, can be brilliantly white. While the color image hardly changes one’s appreciation of the print, it adds new information to our perception of the day, the time, and the place.
